Prostate cancer is quite common in men; every year around 10,000 men die due to this type of cancer in the UK.
Keeping this in mind, scientists at Queen's University have tried and developed a new arrangement of treatment for curing prostate cancer. Its initial stage trials are on and once these get successful, the second phase trials will be initiated.
For the first time, such a treatment has been introduced with the help of which even an advanced and aggressive kind of prostate cancer that has extended to the bones of a man will also be treated.
This new treatment is basically a combination of traditional chemotherapy treatments and two doses of a radioactive chemical. According to Dr Joe O'Sullivan, who is a consultant and senior lecturer in clinical oncology, the chemotherapy treatment alone was not bringing in effective results therefore they practiced this new formula. He said "This is a significant development in the fight against prostate cancer".
Though trial two is still pending but if it clears phase 1 trial, then it will be proved that this combination is safe and feasible. This way, a lot of support to move ahead will be granted.
For conducting the second trial phase, around 100 patients from Northern Ireland and the Netherlands will be called upon. Results will come out in next two years.
