Australian Gaming Sector Dominated by Nintendo in 2009

NintendoOfficial figures have revealed that over the past year, Nintendo managed to outrace its arch rivals, Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's XBox 360, to dominate the Australian gaming sector.

During 2009, Nintendo seems to have given its competitors a good run for their money, as the top 6 selling games across the country over the year were all Nintendo branded software for its Wii gaming console. The chart toppers were - Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and New Super Mario Bros.

Wii and Wii Fit Plus managed to top all figures, as has been confirmed by numbers shared by the research group GfK Retail and Technology Australia.

“2009 was an exciting year for Nintendo. We released a new console with Nintendo DSi and some great games, as well as Wii MotionPlus. 2010 looks to be a big year for Nintendo again, we have Nintendo DSi XL coming, as well as some big titles across both consoles", said Nintendo Australia's Managing Director Rose Lappin.

During 2009, Wii managed to sell about 1.7 million units, and New Super Mario Bros., which was released in November 2009, sold over 200,000 units in a mere 7 weeks.
