World's most advanced plant research facility was opened at Adelaide University's Waite Campus on Thursday. This is a plant accelerator facility with series of 50 high-tech glasshouses and laboratories housing more than a kilometer of conveyor systems. This will help scientists study plants effectively, lessen the breeding time and decide on the plants that can succeed even in changing environment.
Talking about the accelerator, the facility's director, Mark Tester said, "It is the biggest facility of its type in the world. It's the best in the world for ability to measure plants and how plants grow. It can do things which have never been possible before".
He further added, "It will help the Australian farming industry by giving us the chance to discover genes, discover variety of plants, which are better able to maintain growth in the face of those tough conditions that Australian farmers have to cope with. It's very advanced piece of science and technology coming together".
Researchers believe that the facility can even combat drought and salinity problems. It is also expected that this would improve the crop yield that in turn is going to be worth billions of dollars, i. e., five per cent increase in yields for Australian farmers could be worth $200m annually.
