Apps for Meego smartphones won’t work on Tizen devices, but apps for Meego netbooks will do Apps written for Meego smartphones will not be able to run on devices based on new open source operating system, called Tizen, Intel confirmed on Wednesday.

Linux-based mobile platform Tizen, which is claimed to have a greater emphasis on HTML5 support, has been developed by Intel in partnership with South Korean electronics giant Samsung.

Intel said that apps written for Meego smartphones will not be supported to run on Tizen-based devices as Meego has negligible presence in the market.

Meego was formed in 2010 by merging Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo projects. But, it failed to gain popularity, partly due to Nokia's move to Microsoft's Windows Phone platform.

However, apps written for Meego netbooks will work on Tezen devices as Intel will add APIs to allow them to run on either of the two. The chi maker added that APIs would be added as the Meego netbooks were quite well- established.

Imad Sousou, director of the Intel Open Source Technology Center, also said that no single entity would be allowed to control the development or block another firm from contributing in the Tezen project to encourage participation of firm that may be rivals to Intel and Samsung.
