ATS Euromaster, a UK-based tyre firm, has warned motorists that use of illegal tyres could lead to hefty fines of up to £2,500, penalty points on a licence, or a crash.
ATS Euromaster's stark warning to motorists has come ahead of UK's Tyre Safety month that is all set to begin on 1st of October.
ATS Euromaster's Chris Hufflett advised that drivers must scrutinize the tread depths, pressures and all that of the tyres of their vehicles at least once a month or before going on any long ride.
Hufflett added that drivers must ensure that their tyres have enough grip to deal with ice and frost on the roads as winter weather was approaching.
The UK law requires all car and van tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm.
Meanwhile, CUMBRIA Police has announced that it would launch a month long campaign starting next week, urging drivers to ensure that their tyres are safe and legal.
Making the announcement, a spokesperson for CUMBRIA Police said, "In a bid to prevent another tragedy, we will be out and about conducting stop checks across Cumbria to educate drivers about the risks."
ATS Euromaster will offer motorists free tyre safety inspections at any of its 370 centers across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
