Diabetes has been linked to the colon cancer by a new study, though the researchers have not been able to locate the major cause behind it but they have confirmed that the two ailments are connected.
The study was published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology and revealed the results of 14 studies were observed which notified that the people who suffer from diabetes are 38% more prone to get diagnosed with colon cancer as compared to the ones who are not diabetic. Also, the researchers observed that diabetic men are 20% more likely to be diagnosed with rectal cancer.
The researchers had adjusted the other factors like old age, obesity and smoking.
Dr. Edward Giovannucci, from the Harvard School of Public Health, stated that the link between diabetes and colorectal cancer is for sure as according to the other studies.
However, Dr. Edward said, "The cause-and-effect aspect is a bit difficult to consider since diabetes is such a complex disease".
Diabetes patients have high levels of the blood sugar flexible hormone insulin and related hormones named insulin-like growth factors. These hormones encourage cell growth and those cells could be cancer cell as well.
The lead author of the study, Dr. Hiroki Yuhara, stated that the people with diabetes should go for regular screening for colon cancer and rectal cancer.
