For the first time in the history of Europe, it has happened that a woman would be screened for cervical cancer by using Roche's HPV test and for that the Sweden’s Karolinska University Hospital has contracted with Roche Holding AG.
The tool is used to detect virus that could transform themselves in to cervical cancer and if the screening of the lady turns out to be successful then they formally a HPV primary screening program would be launched in Sweden from November 2011.
It was in the year 2008 that this HPV testing method got approval from European Union, who in their guidelines made it clear that women who want to get checked for cervical cancer could also opt for this method as an alternative and now the test would take place for the first time and forms as a pilot project for the screening program that is dependent on the success of the trail.
There is a traditional Pap test which is not as effective as HPV test as this test as in the former test there are no follow ups and women are sent with the report of Pap test alone. With HPV screening, there is hope to reduce the number being affected by the cervical cancer.
