Alberta Health Services has come up with a written advisory for Edmonton and surrounding communities following the cold winter temperature locking-in pollutants close to ground resulting in uncommon smog. A 24-hour winter smog alert was issued on 20th Jan. It stated, "Smog, caused by a buildup of pollutants during light wind conditions and changing temperatures, is leading to poor air quality".
Department spokeswoman Erin Carrier said, "Smog alerts like this would be typical in places like southern Ontario". The warning may last through the weekend.
Alberta health officials warned that the smog could cause health problems, particularly for people with respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis and emphysema. AHS advised them to stay indoors and keep windows closed.
Senior Medical Health Officer Dr. Gerry Predy said, "The quality of air at present is not a health hazard for those in good health. However, people with asthma, bronchitis or emphysema should monitor their reactions and take any preventative measures their physicians have previously recommended."
