Domestic energy use rising due to growing number of appliancesThe Energy Savings Trust recently warned that the UK might fail to meet its domestic energy savings targets because of increasing usage of electrical device in households.

The report prepared by the Energy Savings Trust says that the UK Government’s target to reduce domestic appliance energy consumption by 34 per cent by the year of 2020, but an average household in the UK now uses three-&–a-half times as many electric appliances as 20 years back, which could push the energy saving target far away from reach.

Report’s author Paula Owen said, “We still have a long way to go is with our gadgets and home entertainment appliances, which are using more and more electricity.”

Estimates suggest that 29 per cent of carbon emissions in the UK are generated by electrical devices used in households. According to the report, large plasma television sets, refrigerators and tumble dryers are the biggest offenders.

Separately, a survey carried out by ethical supplier Ebico revealed that increasing energy bills are forcing people to go for smaller houses. The survey claimed that around a third of families want to downsize their homes to tackle soaring energy bills.
