The waiting lists of patients to be admitted in the renowned hospitals have increased to its extreme, reveals a record from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
The neuro-surgery department of the AIIMS has all its beds booked for another 4 to 5 months. If a patient wants to undergo an immediate surgery and needs to shift even on a bed at the general ward of the hospital he has to wait for at least a year.
According to the Commission's high-level expert group (HLEG), India has a poorest hospitalization facility in comparison to other countries. The country provides with a few numbers of beds for every 1,000 people of the nation. As per the figures of the World Health Organization, India has the worst hospital bed provision recorded at: 0.9 beds per 1,000 populations, which should be at least be 2.9 beds as per the population count and the required limit.
Also, the figure of the National Health Profile 2010, India has a hospital bed facility of one bed for every 2,012 people in around 12,760 governments –based hospitals. As per Dr Shakhty Gupta, who heads hospital administration at the AIIMS, "It was recommended in 1948 by the Bore committee that there should be one bed per 1,000 populations. We still haven't been able to reach that target. India has around 0.7 beds per 1,000 populations”.
