Breast cancer medications taken by postmenopausal women could lead them to suffer from bone deformities. Therefore, they have been suggested by the researchers of University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute that they could take `zoledronic acid', an osteoporosis drug to cover up the risk factor.
This five years research has showed that when a woman and especially a postmenopausal woman get diagnosed with breast cancer, she is put on drugs such as aromatase inhibitors. These inhibitors limit the supply of estrogen, a cause to stimulate breast cancer cells in the body which further leads to weakening of bones, and causes bone deformities and fracture. Risk is increased in postmenopausal women as they are already going through lot of hormonal changes and such drugs continue for years, which limits the estrogen level, which is already available in low-level.
In the research, an experiment was taken out and it was found that those women who take zoledronic acid in addition to anti-cancer drugs would help them prevent any bone deformity and it has been also found that if this capsule is taken by a woman for long time, it also helps in increasing bone density.
As said precaution is better than cure, so if zoledronic acid is taken in advance it's more beneficial as it would not make a person suffer from osteoporosis. Dr. Adam Brufsky from the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute joked that it is a different case if one is interested to get her bones fractured then she should not take the medicine in advance.
