Global airline Emirates has hit a multi-million pound agreement with the office of London Mayor Boris Johnson and Transport for London to sponsor a new cable car crossing across the Thames, called Emirates Air Line.
The sponsorship deal worth 36 million pounds will remain in effect for ten years.
Speaking about the deal, Peter Morris from Ascend Worldwide said, “Few airlines have sufficient profitability to be able to sponsor such a public transport facility, but Emirates has not built its business by doing ‘the usual thing'.”
Scheduled for completion in summer next year, Emirates Air Line will run between two stations, viz. Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and the Emirates Royal Victoria Docks.
Emirates Air Line will consist of 20 to 34 cabins, depending on demand, with each cabin capable of carrying 10 passengers. It will consume merely six minutes to cross the Thames.
The system is expected to be used by as many as two million commuters every twelve months. The service will provide users with majestic aerial views of the River Thames and its surroundings.
