Fish Disease Terror Enters Otago Trout Hatchery

Fish Disease Terror Enters Otago Trout HatcheryAdding some more problems to the previous one, the recent fish virus results have proved the fact that the deadly virus has certainly entered the Otago trout hatchery.

However, immediately after these outbreak reports, the region’s Fish & Game authorities have already given a warning call across the region.

The whole issue came to limelight, when lately during the routine hatchery examination; the Officials discovered a bacterial fish disease in one of the fish and fear that the virus would definitely get spread among the other fishes.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture (MFA) has also established the fact that another single juvenile trout in a Fish & Game hatchery on the Taieri River in Otago has also been positively tested with the same virus.

This was not the first time that the virus extension issue has been spotlighted as earlier also, across the Southland region; the deadly infection has killed several lamprey and kanakana variety fishes.

In the meantime, the MFA officials further proclaimed that the current case was the first case across the trout region but they cannot take any risk as they very well know the fact that the poisonous virus could terribly infect a range of fishes, which includes eels, salmon, whitebait and kokopu.

Showing his concern about the issue, Niall Watson, Otago Fish & Game Council’s Chief Executive stated that because the native lamprey in the Mataura River have already been terrorized by the disease ill effects, he strongly believed that within few days, the disease will too get a quick extension through southern waterways.

He added, "I would imagine that the disease is going to be widespread in the south of the South Island anyway but we don't know the implications of it at this stage and we're waiting for more advice from MAF".
