A research says that the number of bacteria’s present on our skin is more than the number of cells in our body. Even the immune system doesn’t react to the presence of these bacteria until and unless these bacteria penetrate deep enough to reach these cells. The study says that certain cells present in the outer layer of the skin persistently proceed in a manner which stops the immune system to behave in a mode as it usually does i. e. of killing the bacteria. These cells known as the Langerhans, build up an affable behavior of the immune system towards the bacteria which does not pose any threat of allergy or other immune disease.
Centenary Institute in Sydney formulated a team which was escorted by Professor Barbara Fazekas de St Groth. The team carried out an experiment on a group of rats in which Langerhans cells held the key power to motivate the immune system to react to the presence of bacteria on their skin. After completion of the experiment Prof. Barbara said that they threw everything possible on the rats but the immune system gave no response due to the presence of Langerhans cells.
Prof. Barbara also said that if they are able to make out how these cells work, they can get the formula to make vaccination which could provide immunity against inflammatory bowel disease, which is quiet common in Australia. It also will make the treatment for some precise allergens possible.
The Langerhans fall into the category of dendritic cells, but unlike them they are bacteria friendly cells. On the contrary dendritic cells burn the bacteria into ashes as they come in contact with these cells.
Scientists are dedicated to find the reason behind such disarray, so that they can innovate new cure and vaccine against many disease caused by the bacteria which the immune system fails to fight.
