Tenofovir Gel Capable of Preventing Herpes

gelA research, conducted by National Institutes of Health, Gilead Sciences Inc. and Universities in Belgium and Italy, has cited that a gel meant for preventing HIV in women is helpful to alleviate herpes. The gel was urbanized in Africa, which is used to destroy microorganisms which can lead to Sexually Transmitted Disease in women.

According to an approximation made by the World Health Organization, about 21% of the sexually active women suffer the ailment out of which, concludes 16% of white women and another 48% of black women. This signifies that black women are at more of risk suffering with the disease.

Herpes can be defined as a viral contagion causing diminutive sore blisters and swelling, most usually at the seam of skin and mucous crust in the mouth, nose or genitals. The disease is curable, and can be prevented from being transmitted by the use of condom.

Another survey conducted by Caprisa, an AIDS research center in Durban, further proved the findings of the previous research. The survey included 450 women who were asked to use tenofovir gel, which proved quiet beneficial in shielding them from herpes. Many lab experiments verified that the gel was capable of plummeting herpes by 51%.

The gel was being used as a tablet by women in South Africa for prevention against HIV as Aids is most common in Africa. As per the scientists, the gel works by converting itself into a form after entering the human tissue which dislocates an enzyme that herpes need to make spread itself any further.

The research is believed to be of great help, although scientists will need more time to bring it into the market for final use.
