“Importance of Iodine in Human Physiology”, was observed as theme where a number of students from class nine to 12 participated in an essay writing competition at Christian Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, on October 21.
The event was organized to observe the global iodine deficiency prevention day chaired by the Chief Medical Officer of Dimapur, Dr. Ritu Thurr. In addition, the Nodal Officer Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Programme, Dr. Yartenla Jamir as well as Dr. Tuska Specialist DHD also witnessed the event.
Iodine is an essential element for the human body. It plays a vital role in a number of activities. Its deficiency can cause a number of health problems regardless of age or gender.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Mokokchung, Dr. Akaba pinpointed certain areas particularly the sub-Himalayan as most likely to suffer goiter. In addition, the officer has hailed people to have a balance and healthy diet with adequate measures of the essential element.
To complete the daily requirement of iodine in the body, he suggested people to make use of iodine salt in order to regulate the metabolism rate of cells at normal level which indeed plays a vital role to check the hormonal level in human body.
During the last year, a study had suggested has exposed the alarming levels of iodine deficiency among school children.
“We should remember that goitre is an indication of the fact that previously there was iodine insufficiency. Iodine levels in urine indicate current status of iodine”, commented a Professor of Paediatrics, SAT Hospital, K. E. Elizabeth.
In addition, she also warned that it is important to know the exact mechanism for consuming the iodine salt as iodine tends to evaporate from salt if not treated well.
