The American Cancer Society has recently reported that women belonging to poor families are not availing breast cancer screening tests. According to the Society, about 72% of the women from affluent society underwent mammogram, a screen to detect breast cancer, in 2008. However, the figures were as low as 52% in rural areas.
Although efforts are being made by the hands of government to fight breast cancer, there is a need to make the screening facility available for the women belonging to lower strata of society. The data revealed by the American Cancer Society clearly shows that poor women are at higher risk of succumbing to death because of breast cancer.
Otis W. Brawley, of American Cancer Society, said, “This continued disparity is impeding real progress against breast cancer, and will require renewed efforts to ensure that all women have access to high-quality prevention, detection, and treatment services”.
The other information provided by the American Cancer Society pertains to lower death rates of breast cancer patients and introduction of effective treatments to curb the fatal disease. The Society has estimated that by 2011, around 230,480 women would be diagnosed with the breast cancer out of them 39,520 women would succumb to death.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Philadelphia researchers have found effective way of treating breast cancer. According to the researchers, the nipples of breast, if targeted, can help in curbing the tumor causing breast cancer through drugs alone.
Before drawing conclusion, the researchers conducted a study on over 12 patients who were provided with chemotherapy drugs through nipples. It has been informed by the researchers that if this method is introduced then it would prove helpful n saving more lives. Moreover, the side effects of the method are also meager.
