To mark the end of breast cancer month, a 30-minute film on the efforts done by 500 breast cancer survivors to encourage breast cancer screenings would be shown to hundreds of women. The event would be held on Sunday in Taipei at the plaza opposite to Taipei City Hall.
They had suffered and even survived the cancer but these 500 women across the globe did not want other women to pass through this stage, therefore they went to remote areas with a message, `prevention is better than cure'. For two years, 2009 to 2011, they carried out as much as 600 activities in regard to spread awareness about breast cancer prevention.
During their journey, some hard hitting facts were revealed. It was revealed that only one in a group of five knows the right person to contact if they witness any kind of lump or breast pain. Others were not aware about the fact that women needs to contact either surgeon or oncologist, and not gynaecologists, for breast cancer check up.
Lin Wei-chieh, the Secretary-General of the Taiwan Breast Cancer Alliance (TBCA), was of the view: "Knowing who to go to when you feel a lump is important because it could save you from delays in getting proper medical treatment".
Next hard hitting fact was that women are unaware of the fact that cancer is curable, if diagnosed on time. Therefore, it is very important to be regular for breast cancer screenings.
In the event, doctors would share some valuable information on breast cancer, its symptoms, followed by its treatments. They would also explain the way by which women could self-examine breast cancer.
Facility of mammography would also be provided to those meeting the age and health insurance criteria.
