Diabetes Leading Cause of Blindness

Diabetes Leading Cause of BlindnessDiabetes is a rapidly growing health concern of the present era that tends to affect a huge global population every year. The health condition is already known to cause a number of health complications and in addition, it cast severe impacts on every sphere of the sufferer's life.

Recently, the Texas Diabetes Council has warned that the health condition needs a serious consideration and marked it as a major reason for causing blindness among Americans in their young age, aged 55 or less. In addition, the council has pinpointed that out of two million people living with diabetes in the region, only 32% have managed to receive an eye test.

Further, the report has claimed that around 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness are reported each year because of diabetic retinopathy, which has played a role to consider diabetes as a major reason of blindness among adults.

"Regular eye exams are crucial for individuals of all ages, particularly those with diabetes or that are pre-disposed to diabetes as the earliest signs of eye complications often occur without warning", added an optometrist, Ly Nguyen, in a statement. Simultaneously, Nguyen has announced to organise a free optomap retinal imaging on Friday for the observance of American Diabetes Month and World Diabetes Day. The tests will be offered at her clinic.

While briefing the optomap retinal test, the expert notified that it has enough potential to scan eye in a short span of time, just quarter of a second, and generates an image of higher resolution around 82% of the retina. This produced image plays a role in pinpointing a number of eye disorders as well as various other diseases, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy along with several other age-related macular degenerations. Besides these, the technique can be used to identify diabetes, hypertension and certain forms of cancers.
