Meningococcal has been severely troubling our lives since long. To cure the illness, medical professionals introduced a national vaccine of meningococcal C but debates running are hinting that soon either we could hear rejections for same (as suggested by Ministry of Health) or the same is continued to save many more affected lives (suggested by The Director of the Meningitis Foundation Mr. Paul Gilberd)
Yes, in its recent statement the Ministry of Health has clearly mentioned that it will not be funding the national vaccine of meningococcal C. Though a coroner, Mr. Brandt Shortland is investigating the publicly funded vaccination program against the disease, its benefits and other affects, Ministry of Health Chief Advisor Child and Youth Health Mr. Pat Tuohy said in his statement that no national program of the vaccination is necessary in the region.
Mr. Tuohy further added in his statement it seems useless to put the entire population of New Zealand under the immunization program for meningococcal C.
In the meantime, Coroner has urged the authorities to review the report of the death of 22-year-old medical student Zachary Gravatt, who died in the year 2009 suffering from meningococcal disease. From the report, it has been noticed that the coroner has demanded the earliest review from the Ministry of Health.
Moreover, the report also highlights benefits of the publicly funded vaccination program for the disease, which if continued would include consultation of the medical professionals directly with the public to make them learn more about the illness.
Regarding the situation, the Director of the Meningitis Foundation Mr. Paul Gilberd told TV ONE's Breakfast that “I'm not saying let's vaccinate the whole population, but what I am saying is I think we need to give some serious consideration to broadening our definition of who is at risk".
