Nicola Roxon Asserts Senate’s Decision

Nicola-RoxonIt seems that tough times ahead of tobacco industry, as it has been confirmed that the Senate has given green signal to implement Federal Government's plain packaging laws for cigarettes to be implemented by December 2012. It has been told that in the new legislation, company logos would be banned and even the pack of the cigarette would be made green.

With 75 % of each packet showing pictures of diseased body parts, there would be strict prohibition of any marketing gimmick by the makers.

The time the proposal was floored in 2010, it has been known that the issue has created lot of stir between the Federal Government and tobacco industry. Now, the road seems to be a lot tough for the makers to cross as they are left with limited options.

With billions of dollars being injected in making these brands, this legislation would put the future of tobacco industry under clouds. However, Health Minister Nicola Roxon seems to be quite unperturbed about this and said that the government is under no pressure whatsoever to kneel down in front of tobacco industry.

"They're using that as a way of threatening both the Government and the Senate to try not to proceed with this law”, said Nicola Roxon, while claiming that if pushed to the limit; tobacco industry would have to deal with stern measures which include legal proceedings.

If reports from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare are to be believed, nearly 15,500 Australians are living under the risk of tobacco-related diseases every year. Not only active, but passive smoking is told to have significant bad effect on children.

The health minister feels that such legislation could make significant impact on reducing the deaths triggered by tobacco related diseases. There is popular belief that this legislation when comes into action would put tobacco industry in tight spot, and moreover, would allow smokers to live a healthy life.
