As per latest information, it has recently been revealed that another breast cancer drug has been outlawed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice). The drug has been banned from routine use in all of the NHS trusts.
In response to the forbiddance, the majority of Cancer charities have expressed disappointment regarding the move, claiming that these sorts of drugs are "particularly valuable".
The drug, dubbed Fulvestrant, is generally called Faslodex in commercial world and is manufactured by AstraZeneca. It is apparently effective in delaying the progression of a definite kind of breast cancer, though it has earlier been refused for various other sorts of breast cancer.
However, the draft guidance by NICE has claimed that it does not consider the confirmation submitted by the manufacturer of the drug as per which, the manufacturer has claimed that it works effectively in comparison with various other persisting treatments. Nice has rejected the claims and has said that the widespread use of the drug under dialogue would not be a healthy practice.
The manufacturer claimed the facts that Fulvestrant could enhance a patient's life more effective as compared to alternatives drugs, but Nice has ruled the claim as `considerably uncertain' seeing the fact that despite showing a delay in the growth of cancer more effectively than one rival drug, it showed no valuable verification that whether or not the drug is better than another.
While expressing her disappointment in this regard, the clinical nurse specialist at Breast Cancer Care, Maria Leadbeater doubted that it will perhaps shrink the number of options available for treatment, which is already down.
In this regard, the Chief Executive of NICE, Sir Andrew Dillon said: "As Fulvestrant has not been proven to be cost-effective, we cannot justify diverting NHS funds from other areas of healthcare in order to fund its use".
