Australia Becomes First to Pass Plain-Packaging Cigarette Law

Australia Becomes First to Pass Plain-Packaging Cigarette LawAustralia has certainly taken its best step to lower the tobacco use in the region by becoming the first country to pass plain packaging of cigarettes but tobacco companies are definitely not happy with the decision and have vowed to fight the new legislation in the court soon.

The idea of plain packaging for cigarettes will be enforced from December next year post which you will find the cigarettes packed in a new olive green pack. The researchers have stated that the new packing is least appealing to smokers and thus it might be possible that many smokers quit their smoking due to same reason. One quit, we win our motive win, says Australia.

Moreover, the new laws that have been recently approved by the upper house of parliament have also decided that the cigarette covers will show no trademark brand logos. The packaging of tobacco products will have a very small and prescribed font of the company’s names that have manufactured the material.

The new design will be showcasing stark health warning messages and pictures, which will cover approx 75 percent of the front of the packet and 90 percent of the back of the packet.

"If this legislation stops one young Australian from picking up a shiny, colored packet and prevents them becoming addicted to cigarettes then in my view it will have been worthwhile," said Mr. John Faulkner, a Labor senator, during the parliamentary debate.

The above action has been the result of the long run debate, which was running in Australia regarding the issue. World is the biggest witness of the entire debate in Australia, including Britain, Canada and New Zealand, the countries that are also planning similar actions to curtail branding.
