Research Unleashes Drug to Reduce Cholesterol by Two-ThirdIn a recent report, it has been found that a new drug could reduce the level of "bad" LDL cholesterol by nearly 66%. This research was done keeping in mind that significant results could be gained after a protein called PCSK9 could be halted.

The research involving 54 men and two women, who were told to be healthy and were not on any medication was made public at an American Heart Association (AHA) conference on Monday. The team made it clear that the results of the drug reduced LDL levels by 64% in the healthy samples, after they were given a single injection having one of five doses of AMG145.

The team managed to track the cholesterol level for 85 to 113 days, and found that with higher doses of the drug, LDL could be kept lower for a significant period of time. The team is of the opinion that there is lot to be done to make the treatment available for patients who have not found positive results from other treatments like statins.

"We have got substantial evidence that lowering cholesterol is beneficial, the problem is that a lot of people need more than one drug to do it”, said Dr. Robert Eckel, Spokesman for the ASA.

The lead author of the research, Dr. Clapton Dias, is of the opinion that there are fair chances that this drug could pave way for future treatment. One thing that the team was told to have made sure is that effect of lower dose would not lasts for too long and hence, there is need that high dose is being given.

There is no question on the effectiveness of statins, but there has to be some alternative treatment in the time to come. If reports are to be believed, six in ten adults in Britain are suffering from high levels of cholesterol, which could make the situation more worsen in future.
