A team of Australian researchers has claimed to explore a new method that can be used to treat degeneration of spinal cord among animals and expressed confidence that the findings will play a significant role to prevent the episodes of paralysis among people living with spinal cord injuries.
Ben Goss along with fellow researchers from the Queensland University of Technology have highlighted two particular proteins for preventing the noteworthy tissue loss as well as scarring among rats with severed spinal cord injuries. Afterwards, the proteins were also observed to minimize the toxicity at the site of injury and stimulated new, healthy nerve growth. Both the proteins were observed with powers to address the inflammation manipulating powers.
As per the reports, more than 30,000 people struggle with spinal cord injuries, all over the world, roughly 400, particularly in Australia. These severe injuries are likely to cause permanent physical disabilities because a prolonged inflammatory response stimulates the degeneration of spinal cord tissue.
"Our research is looking at the effects of adding proteins, also known as growth factors, to the spinal cord to reduce or switch off the inflammation and prevent secondary neurological damage”, added Dr. Ben Goss while emphasizing that not like common bruises, the spinal cord has a persistent inflammatory response that tends to cause more harm.
Dr. Goss claimed that the study has clearly demonstrated that a treatment has potential to minimize or abolish the secondary degeneration after traumatic injury to the spinal cord that is a permanent and irreversible condition, at present. The experts have observed the research findings as a first step for improving the level of cure.
It has been reported that the Walk Again Society, has expressed enthusiasm raising money in order to support the project. The organization aims to fund spinal cord injury research.
