Can a mother allow taking risk of giving birth to twins despite being warned? Perhaps no in the first place, but a recent case has claimed that Sarah Kerr overlooked the severity of the suggestion given by her GP Moira McCaul about not giving birth at home.
It was told by the doctor to the inquest that Sarah Kerr had come to her for medical advice while she was carrying her twins. Though one twin got safely born at home last month, the other could not survive for long after the baby suffered fatal brain damage while on the way to hospital in a car.
Dr. McCaul made it clear that she was never convinced with the idea of giving birth to twins by midwife, but Ms. Kerr was still confident about the same. Even Ms. Kerr has not gone for required blood tests or scans initially required to be done in pregnancy, and to the shock, she had not booked bed in hospital in case of emergency.
"I offered to examine her. Her response was that she'd had a check-up the day before (by her midwife) and didn't want me to examine her. She wasn't happy with the suggestion to do bloods, but she ultimately agreed", said the doctor in an Adelaide inquest over the death of the baby.
Even during the initial days of visits, Ms Kerr had shared her need for a prescription for the drug syntometrine, but the doctor was shocked to know that any midwife would always have this drug in reserve if she has to deal with home birth on regular basis. This drug is mandatory to prevent excessive bleeding after pregnancy. Dr McCaul advice to visit a specialist was also refused by the woman.
Even the doctor warned her about the possible complications in her delivery, but they would be mother seemed to be convinced with home birth only.
