It has been reported that Sony is planning to launch its own Internet-based TV service. It is believed that if Sony proves successful in launching its own Internet-based TV service then it will substitute cable-TV and satellite operators.
However, there is also a possibility that Sony would face tight competition from Roku, Apple TV and others who are already dominating the market. It has been informed that Sony is approaching a number of big media companies, urging them to air their channel through Sony television sets, Blu-ray players and the Playstation gaming consoles.
It seems like Sony is following footsteps of cable operators by striking a deal with channel operators directly, which would like to provide subscriber option to the viewers so that a package of channels could be provide to viewers.
According to speculations, Sony might be charging customers for individual channel rather than charging them for a package as done by Cable-TV. The chances of Sony's internet TV services becoming popular are quite high as millions of its internet-connected devices are already installed in the majority of American homes.
Sony is the most reliable brand in America. There are as many as 18 million users of its gaming console. Moreover, 77 million users all over the world have account at Sony's PlayStation Network. For its internet-based TV services, it is already in discussion with media companies like News Corp., NBCUniversal and Discovery Communications.
However, the biggest hurdle for Sony would be striking a deal with channels. As Sony is planning to give competition to the cable-TV, it might have to break the current channel fee system. There is no doubt that that Sony would be successful in his plans if it breaks the current channel fee system. However, this step by Sony may trigger turmoil among the cable-TV and satellite TV operators.
