Could regular mammography save one's life from breast cancer? Perhaps that's something which could spark debate in flick of second. It has become a hot topic of discussion in medical fraternity as it has been told in the new breast cancer screening guidelines that one should limit number of mammograms in their lifetimes.
While there are majority of women and other groups which are hell bent on ensuring that as many as regular breast screening tests are being done, the recently released guidelines have surely put women under doubt.
The debate had started when a task force in the US in 2009 claimed that there is need to reduce the number of mammography screening for women, but there is no conclusive statement so far about the same. There was another report that the benefits attached with mammography screening do have an edge over side effects.
There is no doubt that this recent controversy has again sparked the same confusion, and that's why doctors feel that women must consult before taking a final call. Published online Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the guidelines have kept those women aside who are under the escalated risk of breast cancer.
There are many doctors like Dr. Martin Yaffe, a Senior Scientist in the imaging research program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, who are of the say that these newly served guidelines could be "disastrous" for women.
"I would estimate that in the next 10 years if this were to happen and women in their 40s were not screened, about 2,000 women in Canada will die from breast cancer", said Yaffe, who is involved in imaging at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.
Till the time conclusive assertions are not being made, women must be in close discussion with their doctors to get the best possible way out for them.
