Sheds Improving Health Of Men

Health-Of-MenFour year back, sheds were introduced for men in Australia with the pursuit of making them aware of prostate cancer. Its popularity and uniqueness has enlarged its number to 20. These days, Australian men are seen spending their spare time in the sheds along with their friends, doing constructive work and bringing awareness among themselves about prostate cancer.

Greenwich Men's Shed, which is run by the charity Age UK, has attracted about 50 men to join it. Out of these men, some are above 70 and some are yet quite young. There is no doubt that men as compared to women tend to ignore their health care needs. Although, it is contrary to their nature.

Men are found to be dominating women in almost all walks of life and at home. Still, their ignorance about the health needs has put them in tight position. Millions of men all over the world are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Still, a few are aware of its symptoms and treatment.

Sheds were introduced with the hope that it will provide them a place where they could talk without any hesitation about health related issues. In Britain, there are about 11.5 million domestic sheds. Besides, Britons spend 60 million hours a week in these sheds.

While acknowledging the contributions of sheds in improving the health of men, Peter Baker, Chief Executive of the Men's Health Forum said, “They've caught men's imagination. Men like to potter. These are from a generation who, on Sunday afternoon, like to pull a car apart and put it together with a Haynes manual”.

The popularity of sheds, with the passage of time, has increased by manifold. The concept of establishing sheds was drawn from the fact that men like to potter around in their free time and this is the reason why they spend their Sunday afternoon in repairing their old car.
