It has been recently revealed in a report that tanning beds, which many fair-skinned people believe to be ideal tool for maintaining a natural tan on their bodies, might be potential harbors of skin cancer.
Now the research further adds that tanning beds might also be a place where people could contract basal cell carcinoma BCC, which is another deadly form of the disease.
These findings were given in the American Academy of Dermatology journal. The research has been conducted by a team from the Minnesota University. The researchers are of the view that those people who used tanning beds regularly, regardless of their skin type, were at a high risk of contracting melanoma cancer, which is an aggressive and potentially fatal form of the disease.
The tanning beds are actually exposing the body to too much UV rays, all at one time, and that too from very close by. This is the reason for the increase in chances of infection in the body.
It is essential that people understand these impending risks before they take their next appointment at a sun bed clinic.
The survey revealed that women have a greater chance of being affected by this disease, and there is need for careful protection against the same. Tanning beds shouldn’t be used too much; one should rather opt for going out in the sun and getting the desired tan. Sure looking tanned might be the ‘in’ thing, but one shouldn’t compromise their health or the same.
"We were also surprised to find that one-third of our study participants with BCC had already had at least one additional BCC before age 40, which is very alarming as skin cancers increase in frequency in age”, revealed Susan T Mayne from the School of Public health.
