Human Rabies Case Surfaces in South Carolina, After 50 YearsIt has been recently revealed that there has been the break of the first human rabies case in South Carolina, in the last 50 years. This time it has struck a middle aged woman, this being the first case in 50 years. It was revealed by Dr. Eric Brenner from the Disease Control Bureau and Department of Health.

He said that the sad part is that human rabies cases are very rare now because of the right precautions being taken. But the worst part is that most of these cases result in death.

"The rabies virus travels slowly through the body until it reaches the brain and central nervous system and produces serious initial symptoms including headache, difficulty swallowing, seizures, anxiety, agitation and confusion”, he said further.

He also revealed that a week’s time is what most patients can survive after the onset of these symptoms.

Jim Beasley, Health and Environmental Control spokesman is of the view that the Federal medical privacy laws are preventing any further information or detail being given about the patient.

The officials did reveal that the woman is from Sumter Country and lives in the mid areas of the state.

Rabies is a very dangerous disease and occurs mainly from the bite of the animals like foxes, raccoons, dogs, skunks and cats and so on. It is essential that people get vaccinations as soon as they get bitten by these unvaccinated animals; otherwise the saliva they carry has the potential of transferring the disease in humans.

The disease turns out to be really ugly in the later stages, when a person becomes hydrophobic, and is allergic to light as well. Rabies patients have a tortured end.
