Cancer is a deadly illness with all of its types proving severely detrimental for human beings.
Ovarian cancer is one of the gynecological cancers which are extremely life-threatening. But soon, we can hear some good news regarding treatment of the deadly illness as BC Cancer Agency researchers, in Victoria, have recently claimed that they are very close to discovering a vaccine that can provide treatment for the same.
Prof. Brad Nelson, a molecular and cellular biologist is leading the project of the research at the BC Cancer Agency’s Deeley Research Centre. He said in his statement that his team believes that clinical trials of the vaccine will make it evident that the drug can take care of ovarian cancer.
Nelson, and his team, has made this development possible by achieving some recent breakthroughs in DNA sequencing. “It’s a whole new approach to cancer vaccines that’s never been used before”, he said.
The funding power behind Nelson’s work is Genome B. C., a government-cum-private organization acting as a catalyst in life-science research, including those in the field of medicines. The group has invested $550 million in such projects as of now.
In its recent reports, the Ovarian Cancer Canada has revealed deadly figures related to casualties caused by ovarian cancer every year. The report shows that more than 2,600 Canadian women are being diagnosed with the disease every year, out of which 1,750 actually die due to it.
Early detection of ovarian cancer increases the survival rate by up to 90%. Unfortunately, we have no screening tools yet to diagnose the illness at its early stage, and therefore most diagnoses occur when the cancer reaches its advanced stage.
Thus, the ongoing study stands very important for the medical community and also for all those suffering from the deadly ovarian cancer.
