It has been recently revealed that the Drug Controller General of India has recently given a green signal to Glenmark Pharmaceuticals for going ahead with the phase III trials of the new drug for the treatment of diarrhea. The name of the drug is Crofelemer, and is being developed in order to be able to treat acute diarrhea conditions suffered by adults.
The firm is of the view that there is going to be a trial conducted on 700 patients to find out the authenticity of the drug, before it is ready for being introduced in the market. The firm is also fighting an arbitration case with Napo Pharmaceuticals Inc. They are of the view that the clinical trial shall be conducted on patients from India and Bangladesh.
"We are delighted to commence Phase III trials for Crofelemer in adult acute diarrhea. Adult diarrhea is a big concern around the world especially in emerging markets and globally millions of patients suffer from diarrhea every year", revealed Mr. Glenn Saldanha, the MD and Chairman for Glenmark Pharma Company.
It was further revealed that the firm had received a licence from Napo Pharmaceuticals for the purpose of distribution of the drug, which they are now not abiding by. They are now terminating the agreement which they had signed for giving permission to Glenmark.
The matter has been taken to court and both firms are awaiting results. It's a matter of time before the drug can be tested for worth and authenticity, and then brought into the markets for the effective and easy solution to acute diarrhea, which is capable of keeping people in bed for many days at a stretch, dehydrating the body and making the person weak and lethargic.
