Avastin Slows Progression of Ovarian Cancer

Avastin Slows Progression of Ovarian CancerOvarian cancer, which is said to be a silent killer as it gets diagnosed too late, is said to have found its treatment. The New England Journal of Medicine has published a study that revealed that if women at advanced stage of ovarian cancer are treated with Avastin then it hauls up the disease by six months.

The UK Medical Research Council funded research said Avastin is more effective when given at advanced stage, and if it is given in initial time then it is said to stalk the progression of disease by two months.

The lead researcher Dr. Tim Perren, who is consultant Oncologist at St James’s Institute of Oncology, said that Avastin is also used to treat colon cancer. Their results show that now onwards, it would also be widely used for ovarian cancer patients.

Perren said these are initial findings of their research and they cannot conclude anything before 2013. But one thing that is sure, Avastin would surely provide better benefit than other available treatments to ovarian cancer patients.

In order to reach at above conclusion, they conducted an experiment on 1.528 ovarian cancer patients. They were randomly assigned either to take chemotherapy or a mix of traditional treatment and Avastin as after follow up recovery treatment.

Main motive to conduct this experiment was to know after how much gap disease has returned. It showed that Avastin has declined the progression by six months in advanced cancer. It was the most shocking revelation for researchers as they thought maximum benefit would be derived by those who are at initial stage.

Dr. Perren said, “This suggests that bevacizumab or Avastin could be considered as a treatment for women with an advanced form of the disease, or whose cancer has come back after chemotherapy treatment”.
