It is said that the British Government would face a lot of difficulties to review the faulty breast silicone implants that get manufactured by the French firm Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP). One of the main reasons is lack of regulation on cosmetic surgery clinics.
Due to this, a lot of rupture incidents go unnoticed and henceforth it also becomes difficult to assess risk to patients. Even leading surgeons have admitted it to be one of the main reasons for faulty breast silicone implants.
As per the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, the one which approves devices in the UK, failure rate is not even 1%. But data retrieved from the French Government and Transform, one of the famous cosmetic clinic chains narrates a complete different story.
Transform told the Department of Health that their rupture rate from the implants they get from PIP was 7%. The French Government said their estimation rate is not less than 5%. Both the percentages are quite high than the regulator body’s announced percentage.
This problem has only one solution, said Nigel Mercer who is the former president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. She said even breast implants should get noted down in the national register.
Surprise visits and regular checks at clinics would derive even better results. The government needs to come up with such ideas as annually more than 40, 000 British women undergo breast silicone implants. If the material would not be good then it could either burst or melt inside the body. Both the things are extremely harmful for women patients.
News if PIP breast implants failure has raised concern among patients. One of the patients said she has PIP’s silicone implant and a few days back only she felt a lump in her breast. She is eight months pregnant and is scared for her baby.
