One of the environment lobby groups, the Campaign for Better Transport has chosen social media to raise voice against hike in rail fares. Under the Government's annual price-rise formula, rail ticket prices have gone up on an average by 5.9%. But, season ticket fares have shown an increase of 11%.
The lobby group said those who are interested to take part in the protest could log in to their website, and show their support by commenting on unjust fare hike. Increase in fares clearly shows that the government has favored train operators, and not commuters.
It has been announced that Britain would soon get hit by inflation and its effect could also be seen. Then also, the raising ticket fares are quite wrong on part of the government, said Maria Eagle, the Labour's Transport spokesman.
There is no doubt that life is already getting quite difficult due to inflation. On the top, if commuting charges would also increase, and that too to such an extent, then life would really become full of struggle. Railway is one of the major transport modes for people, but it seems they have to look for another option to commute to their workplaces.
It is said that some people would even have to shell out hundreds of pounds for travelling to distant places. People are feeling a bit cheated as the Government promised to raise prices by just 1%, but the reality narrates a whole different story.
In the whole matter, Eagle seems to taking out her benefit. She has promised people that if their party gets elected next time then would not raise travel charges by more than 1%. On this issue, Railway Minister Theresa Villers said they have tried to help passengers as much as possible.
