While marijuana use has always been debatable, a new research seems to have probed all in all a different angle of it. It was said that there are two ingredients found in marijuana which have significantly opposite impacts on some specific regions of the human brain.
It was made possible after a team of researchers led by Dr. Sagnik Bhattacharyya, a psychopharmacologist at King's College in London, studied 15 healthy men who used to consume marijuana. The team conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans on them to analyse the reaction of their brain after they took pills having THC, cannabidiol or a placebo. It was found by the team that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) pushed the brain processes that could trigger psychosis, while after consuming cannabidiol; men were found to have no such reaction.
"Pairwise comparisons revealed that 9-THC significantly increased the severity of psychotic symptoms compared with placebo and CBD whereas there was no significant difference between the CBD and placebo conditions", said the team, which is of the opinion that there is no difference found after one consumed cannabidiol or a placebo.
Published in journal Archives of General Psychiatry, the study has made it clear that specific regions of brain respond differently to chemicals found in marijuana. So far, it was being said that THC can induce symptoms of psychosis in healthy people and even could make situation more worrying in those who are already grappling with the disease. While the THC was found to have affected the prefrontal cortex, it was also found that there was reduced activity in the region called the striatum. This is somewhat clearer now that THC plays crucial role in understanding the long term effects of marijuana.
While the study is getting the attention of medical fraternity, it has become more imperative to understand the long team effects of marijuana.
