The Sydney Harbour Bridge needs to be refurbished like hell on an urgent basis, says the Roads Minister, Duncan Gay, as revealed by recent reports. Growing 80 years old, the “dear lady” needs a facelift so it could keep itself in shape for the next 80 years as well, he said.
It has been found by the reporters that the Harbour Bridge is going to be renovated due to which it would be held closed for the coming two or three weekends. As per the findings, the general traffic would not be allowed to travel over the bridge from 10pm (AEST) on Friday until 5 am on Monday. However, taxis, cyclists, Bus lane users and pedestrians can cross it during the project too.
Though expected time for completion of project work is 30 January, there could be delay on use of alternate routes as it all depends on the climatic conditions as how many days would be taken to repair the bridge, Mr. Duncan Gay said. Since waterproofing needs dry weather to dry and if a downpour is forecast, the project would possibly postpone. He has been urging commuters and travellers to use public transport instead of their own vehicles.
He also told the reporters that extra trains and buses will be put on for the same to make it convenient for people travelling daily. Although it could cause trouble but should not be underestimated. "There is a price of progress and the price of progress in fixing up icons like the bridge is a slight disruption to people's lives", he adds to the context.
It is the best time possible for renovating the bridge as 30,000 less number of people daily cross the bridge during this period of the year, said Mr. Gay.
