Recent reports have revealed that a winter virus outbreak has been realized in Sussex, which has compelled three hospitals to shut their wards. These hospitals have prohibited new admissions in the wards wherein patients have been affected.
Eastbourne District General Hospital and Hasting's Conquest Hospital, two hospitals in Sussex, have closed their wards wherein patients had been affected by the virus, as it is extremely harmful to health and is communicable too. Along with the two hospitals, one other hospital Bexhill has also closed its Irvine Unit and is not allowing new admissions in that section.
The reason for the action taken by these hospitals is that several cases of norovirus have been found by East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. Moreover, 20 such cases are confirmed to be norovirus cases and the rest of the cases are showing the symptoms as well, as per the findings of the report. Also, it has been found that the NHS trust is urging the ones showing symptoms of the virus to remain away from the hospital. Nausea, diarrhea and vomiting are the common symptoms that make the virus easily communicable.
"The public can help contain the spread of this virus by not visiting friends or relatives in hospital if they are experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting and feel unwell with gastrointestinal symptoms”, said Dr. Barry Phillips, Director of infection prevention and control. He has revealed to the sources that norovirus is highly infectious, which is the reason why they had introduced rigorous control measures and stopped admissions of patients.
He also made a request to people visiting patients not to bring food in open containers and to bring it only in sealed containers.
