In a recent study, it has been revealed that a new stem cell treatment has come out to address the woes of those who are suffering from type 1 diabetes. It has been found that the treatment could give enough relief to those who have negligible ability to produce insulin. This treatment allowed blood sugar levels to reduce to a safe limit, thereby limiting the chances of future complications.
The revelation was made after involving 15 Chinese people who were of the age from 15 to 41 years old and had been suffering from the disease for average nine year. Published online on January 9 in the journal BMC Medicine, the research has paved way for more medical solution in the near future. It has been told that Type 1 diabetes makes one suffer as the body's immune system cells destroys the insulin-producing (beta) cells in the pancreas. This is what makes the disease so complicated. Those suffering from it have no limited options except getting insulin injected in the body.
Our study brings a new hope for people with type 1 diabetes. If we can control the autoimmunity, we may reverse the diabetes. We showed that the islets 1/8cells3/8 can start to work again", said Dr. Yong Zhao, an assistant professor in the section of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the University of Illinois at Chicago. There are chances that this treatment would also help in curing other autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
As the research is getting the attention of one and all, there are chances that this research would be extended to get some concrete solutions to be used for medical practices. The study was found to have caught the medical fraternity by surprise. There are hopes raised to an extent that it could change the face of medical science in the time to come.
