Despite Abortion Laws, 66% of Indians Take Unsafe Route

Abortion-LawsMaking an utterly shocking disclosure, a recently conducted study, which has been made available in the recent Thursday edition of the medical journal “The Lancet”, has revealed that India is rapidly getting rampant when it comes to the issue of unsafe abortions. As per a survey conducted in 2008, it was revealed that the country recorded in excess of 6.5 million abortions, of which more than two-thirds, 66%, of abortions were considered unsafe.

In addition, India has also witnessed that the major lump of the abortions were conducted in the south and central Asia, where around 6.5mn women went for abortion.

For the said region, the stats revealed that more than 200 women, out of every one lakh women who went for abortions, died due to unsafe abortions. The findings are reportedly based on worldwide abortion figures released recently by the World Health Organization (WHO) in alliance with the Guttmacher Institute of New York.

During the course of study, the researchers found that there were in excess of 2.2mn more abortions done in the year 2008 (43.8 million) when evaluated against the figure of 41.6 million that was recorded in 2003. Internationally, the rate of abortion was 28 out of every 1,000 women, and it clearly describes that the rate has remained intact ever since 2003.

While expressing his opinion in this regard, the lead author of the study, Dr. Gilda Sedgh, of the Guttmacher Institute, claimed, “Abortion is legal in India and the services are much safer that many other developing countries. But for some reason, women choosing to abort are not taking advantage of this liberal law”.

In addition, medical experts and officials from all over the world are incessantly gaining panic as there is a rapid increase in frequency of unsafe abortions being carried out in unsafe clinics.
