Lincolnshire is said to have the highest rates of obesity in England and current incidence which took place at the Lincolnshire school has strengthened the calls for healthy school meals. At the school, it was found that one mother has sent her child with sandwiches which were just filled with smarties.
The teachers were shocked to see it and has suggested for free healthy school meals. In addition to it, health workers at the NHS Lincolnshire also suggested the same. During their investigations in different schools in the city, they found that many pupils were gorging on unhealthy food such as chips, cold drinks, sweets and chocolates.
It is said that healthy meals would not increase the nutrition intake of student but would also improve their health. Some of the options for healthy school meals are baked potatoes, lean meat and pasta.
Lynne McNiven, who is an Assistant Director of Public Health, said that there were appalled when they got to know that one student has got sandwiches with smarties filling. McNiven further affirmed, “We went into the schools to have a look and found the children eating what I would class as picnics, the sort of lunch you might have once in a while as a treat, not every day”.
In addition to it, it is also considered among ministers that they would soon start school dinners for kids. For now they have been working on this idea and it is hoped that soon it would come into practice.
Ministers said that it is very important to reduce the obesity level as 25% boys and 33% girls who are aged between two and 19 year are obese. Health experts said that free school meals would be of great help for children.
