Autism and Substance Disorders Targeted by Revised Psychiatry Manual

AutismAs per the new guidelines which are currently being considered by the American Psychiatric Association, people with Asperger's Syndrome would now be included in the same diagnostic group as those who are suffering with autism and pervasive developmental disorders.

Psychiatrists are presently busy revising guidelines, known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The manual encompasses specific implications on how psychiatric medicines are developed and prescribed, what treatments get medical insurance coverage, which method doctors should adopt in treating patients with different disorders and how patients end up viewing their own identities.

The revisions, which will be a part of the manual's fifth edition, due for release in 2013, were announced officially on Wednesday, and can be read at DSM5. org.

The DSM would also see the creation of a whole new category of "behavioral addiction disorders", and while currently the category includes only gambling, Internet addiction and sex addiction would soon be included.
