It might surprise you to know that statins help in lowering the levels of cholesterol in the body. Statins is believed to play multiple roles, as on one side it helps in keeping the arteries younger, flexible and freer of plaque and on other side, it helps in cooling the chronic inflammation.
Healthier arteries prevent the chances of a person experiencing strokes. Therefore, we can say that statins is helpful in preventing heart attacks and brain attacks. There are many other benefits of statins. It has been found that it is helpful in warding off the strains of prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction.
The list of benefits of having statins is quite long. Cataracts, Alzheimer and blood clots are other health problems which can be prevented by the help of Statins. The list doesn’t end here. When it comes to flu infection, statins has again an edge over the other medications. It has been found the hospitalized patients with flu infection are more likely to succumb to death if they are not prescribed with statins.
In the US alone, the statins is prescribed 255 million times in a year. To gauge the effectiveness of statins in reducing heart stroke, William J. Kostis from Harvard Medical School conducted a reviewed the data from 18 randomized clinical trials of statins with sex-specific outcomes.
Overall, 141,235 patients were studied which included of 21,468 cardiovascular patients. During the review, it was found that the patients who were taking statins had lower cardiovascular activities as compared to those who were not prescribed with it. William J. Kostis noted, “Statins decrease cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in both women and men... Therefore, statins therapy should be used in appropriate patients without regard to sex”.
