It has been revealed that a Queensland researcher has found a novel treatment for throat cancer. Rajiv Khanna, who is a scientist at Queensland Institute of Medical Research scientist, has found that immunotherapy is quite beneficial for people suffering from throat cancer.
It not only benefits people, but also doubles the chances of survival time by approximate 500 days. In order to reach at the above conclusion, he conducted an experiment in which he enrolled 24 patients who have been suffering from advanced nasopharyngeal cancer.
After providing them immunotherapy for some weeks, it was found that their survival time has doubled and they were able to live more than 500 days. Rajiv told that they took blood from patients, but isolated white cells in the body which are known as T-cells.
These cells are known as body's natural defense against any problem. The T-cells were grown in a lab dish and were made stronger and after enhancing their killer qualities. They were infused back again into the patients.
The treatments worked and people were able to survive more days, aid Rajiv. He further affirmed, "Generally these patients would be dying within six months or something like 200 days, but we have been able to extend that up to 520 days, which in itself is quite impressive and remarkable".
