A recent report has unveiled that children between the age of six months and five years should take vitamin D drops on a regular basis. It has been suggested and urged by the chief medical officer of Scotland to give vitamin D doses to children of age 6 months to 5 years as well as pregnant women daily.
It has been told by the chief health officer Sir Harry Burns that lack of vitamin D in small children could cause serious illness and bone disease in them. He has warned that avoidance of Vitamin D could raise the risk of rickets in pregnant women and children, which is also known as childhood disease.
The report has found that rickets is a disease that leads to softening of bones in small children. The medical officer has thus suggested the expecting women and young children to take a diet rich in vitamin D such as oily fish, fortified fat spreads, eggs and powdered milk. He told the reporters that lack of sunlight could also be risky as it protects us against a number of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, cancer and type 1 diabetes.
“Vitamin deficiency plays a great part in diseases that affect mothers and babies in Scotland and also accounts for the high levels of multiple sclerosis that we have in Scotland”, he said. Sir Harry Burns has thus, also written a letter to Scotland’s health professionals urging them to promote a campaign that appeared as a leading baby charity, Tommy’s.
The campaign is aimed at spreading awareness amongst pregnant women about health risks due to lack of vitamin D. It is being said that the move by the chief medical officer would bring a reform in the country.
