As per reports, it has been revealed that controversy has taken place between the NSW government and the opposition over the ban on tanning salons. The Environment Minister, Robyn Parker, announced that they would completely ban the commercial solaria tanning units in NSW by the end of 2014.
However, the opposition ministers have argued that the government should not wait for so long and right way ban the tanning units which is increasing the skin cancer cases. Parker has justification for not putting a ban immediately.
As per Parker, she has told all the solaria industry members that they should make transitions in their business and shift to a safer business. Parker said that this much time is needed for them to wind up their business and switch to safer alternatives. Right away putting the ban would not give them needed time to think other business alternatives and would leave them jobless.
The Opposition told that the government should introduce the ban thinking that Australia has the highest skin cancer rate. One of the common skin cancers that affect Australians is melanoma. They further affirmed that if the government would wait for two more years then the number of skin cancer cases would further increase.
Opposition environment spokesman Luke Foley said that for sometime the tanning salon business has been booming. The government would have taken action right there and then, but it would not be late for the government to take an immediate action.
However, Parker said that she agrees with Foley, but they should understand that there are more than 100 businesses and 254 commercial tanning units registered in NSW. An immediate action would create havoc in their lives. They also need to time to move to safer alternatives.
