It has been reported that the Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is planning an innovative method to guide its customers in choosing healthy food products. As per the plans, the store would be introducing green icon on the food products that are deemed to be healthier for the consumers.
The green icon thus placed over the packaging of the food products would read ‘great for you’. It has been informed that the green icon would have white strips which would be shaped in the form of human spreading his arms toward the sky.
It is for the very first time when such a campaign has been held by a retailer. The concept has been introduced by the retailer with the pursuit of getting rid of obesity which has started haltering the growth of children.
Food manufacturers have been placing nutrition label over the packaging of food products for past may years. But in 2009, the Food and Drug Administration accused many manufacturers of misleading consumer through the labeling.
It has been informed by the Wal-Mart that the new green icon would be placed over the in-house products under the Marketside brand. It further said that about 25% of its Great Value-brand foods are eligible to carry the green icon.
Andrea Thomas, of Wal-Mart Stores, said that the technique thus devised by the retailer would help its customers to quickly decide as to which food product is good for their health. Eggs are also among the food items which would be awarded ‘great for you’ icon.
For quite long time debate over the health value of eggs was being held. But now, it has been decided that the eggs are healthy and therefore should be given the green icon.
