It is a trend that somewhere in the United States, people pull their socks up, swath in pink, secure their joggers and go all out with a deep sense of enthusiasm to join the "Race for the Cure", the largest and most flourishing fundraising event in the world that is aimed at spreading awareness regarding the causes, consequences and prevention of the potentially terminal breast cancer. The aim of the event is also to raise funds for supporting treatment, research and cure for the lethal breast cancer that kills a large number of women all over the world on a yearly basis.
Ever since the first race that was held in Dallas during the year 1983, in excess of 1.6mn partakers have pounded all over the 5km courses as part of a sequence which now covers as many as four continents.
But, there are now rising suspicions that the race, and the huge amount of funds it generate, may well be one of the utmost noticeable fatalities of the repercussion which has swallowed the organisation running it. As per reports, the organization, dubbed "Susan G Komen for the Cure Foundation", has now expressed its decision of stopping funds on Planned Parenthood, the prominent reproductive health care organization in the nation. The decision, as per claims made by critics, has been inspired by extensive pressure that had been exerted from anti-abortion campaigners. Planned Parenthood is an aim of pro-life lobbies since a handful of its centres care allegedly providing abortion services.
While expressing Komen's though in this regard, the Executive Director of Komen Aspen, Logan Hood, said: "There has been damage to the network. We definitely feel the trust has been broken. All the affiliates are having a hard time with that. There are affiliates who have races coming up and I'm hoping they are going to get through it".
Hood is one of those 19 affiliates of Komen who provided grants to the local breast screening campaigns of Planned Parenthood.
