Researchers Working Towards Lowering the Spread of Cancer

Researchers Working Towards Lowering the Spread of CancerA recent study conducted by the researchers of the Melbourne have found that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help in reducing the spread of cancer. According to the researchers, the drugs work by narrowing the vessels which is deemed to be responsible of transferring cancer fluid to other part of the body.

The findings of the study have been published in the journal Cancer Cell. In previous studies, it was revealed as to how cancer spreads to whole body. During the study, the researchers found that a link between the poor survival rate of the cancer patients and increased cellular expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-D (VEGF-D) with cancer metastasis.

The VEGF-D has been characterized as an important factor in producing angiogenesis, which produced by the tumor. The angiogenesis helps tumor in attracting the endothelial cells which ultimately leads to the spread of cancer to the whole body of a patient.

The researchers conducted a small test over the mouse model and found that the VEGF-D promotes dilation of the lymphatic vessels however NSAIDs inhibited prostaglandin synthesis and reduced vessel dilation, which ultimately reduces the growth of the cancer.

Lead researcher Stacker noted, “These insights may assist with the design of additional therapeutics for cancer patients and enhance current approaches that aim to prevent the spread of cancer cells through the lymphatic system and potentially to distant organs”

It is hoped that the findings of the study would help in inventing effective medication for cancer. Cancer is a deadly disease which affects millions of life all over the world every year. In most of the cases cancer is diagnosed at late stage which lowers the chances of one surviving from it. However, by reducing the chances of it of spreading to other parts of body could help in improving survival rate.
